Introduction of Visitors:
Ken Holman introduced Kelly Morse. Kelly is presently the NE MnSTAC Chair.

Announcements & Calendar Items:
The U&CF Update was handed out but not discussed.

Bekky Hargrave made note of the Third Annual Urban Forestry Club’s Professional Tree Care Seminar being held on April 10th, 2000. A neon orange handout was sent in last months MnSTAC mailing.

Peggy Sand announced that the DNR just received word from the USDA Forest Service that District Energy St Paul, Inc is receiving a USDA FS Economic Action - Rural Development Through Forestry Grant for their project called "The Energy Tree: Urban Trees for Biomass Energy Public Interpretation Program". This will be a joint project in downtown St. Paul between District Energy and their new next door neighbor the Science Museum of Minnesota by which the new urban wood waste fueled co-generation facility will be designed to incorporate exhibits and programs to interpret using urban wood waste for fuel and the story of urban trees leading up to that.

Committee Reports:
Outreach - Glen Shirley reported that Brian Hagberg from Mankato will be the new chair.

Education & Research - The next Advocate mailing should be in April. The topic of this upcoming issue will be on planting. Also, there will be two workshops in May on storm damage, one in the Duluth area and one in the Mankato area.

Forest Health - This committee will be meeting on April 13th.

Arbor Month - The new information materials have been sent out and additional copies are available.

Publicity & Awards - The awards banquet went off very well and the committee was given a round of applause all of their hard work.

The following committees provided no report or had no representative present: Legislative, Planning, Scholarship, Tree Emergency Response, Preservation, and Utilization.

Agency Updates:
Glen Shirley noted that this year’s awards showed an excellent emphasis on youth working, and working with youth. What exactly is our role as mentors? We need to show youth that it is very important to stop and "smell the roses", or plant a tree. We also need to help people understand what kind of tree they are planting and show them the impact that the tree they plant will have on urban forests. Volunteer projects are a good way for individuals (like all of us) to be a mentor. Take the opportunity while it’s there, don’t let it pass you by.

Mark Stennes reported on the Stem Girdling Roots Forum recently held. It is believed to be a success and a step in the right direction. This is a legitimite forest health problem. One aspect of this problem is properly planting your tree, the second is that individuals need to get a tree worth planting. The attention of many was drawn at this forum, hopes to spread awareness and solve problems continue.

Meeting adjourned @ 11:27.
