Calendar Items

From the Urban & Community Forestry Update, Don Mueller highlighted a new workshop at the University of Crookston titled Northwest Minnesota Community Forestry Workshop on March 28, also a reminder about the Shade Tree Short Course at Bethel College on March 20th and 21st.

Gary Johnson wanted to let everyone know that the Shade Tree Advocate will be out soon, they are now about a week late, but should be out in the mail soon. If anyone is interested in the certified arborist exam, Gary Johnson cannot do anything but send you an application and you have to be registered twelve days before the exam with ISA.

Rich Hauer wanted to let everyone know that the Tree Inspector Workshop will be March 31st in St. Paul, more information will be coming soon on the other dates for the workshop in greater Minnesota.

Mike Max noted that the next meeting will be the STAC awards meeting at the Golden Valley Country Club. In April, the meeting will be held at the Staring Lake Outdoor Center in Eden Prairie. We are looking for a little variety to our meeting places, and featured programs if any one has any suggestions please pass them on to Mike Max or Rich Hauer.

Featured Program

Peter Dziuk from the Dept of Agriculture and Steve Katovich from the USDA Forest Service presented a report on Gypsy Moth. A copy of the report is included in these minutes.

Ken Holman made a motion that MnSTAC write a letter to the Dept. of Agriculture, encouraging them to fill the vacant position held by Peter Dziuk as soon as possible. Mark Stennes seconded it. Motion passed. Mike Max will write the letter.

Mike Max passed out a MNReLeaf Factsheet on the history of the MNReLeaf Programs that will be going to the legislators and community leaders. The Factsheet will be our source of information for the legislators as we are waiting for a number to be assigned to a bill for more MNReLeaf funding.

Mike Max presented to a picture to Glen Shirley, and thanked him for his dedicated service during his term as president of STAC.

Agency Update

DNR – Ken Holman moved that MnSTAC advise the DNR to provide an additional $12,000 of federal funds to the University of Minnesota to help pay for a full time technician. This person will help create the information base for the proposed MN Center for Community Forestry. Jim Herman seconded it. Motion passed.

Jean Mouelle said the Best Management Practices workshops were very successful, the DNR and Tree Trust were delighted with the tremendous response they received. They have two more in April - a brochure is enclosed with the dates and locations of the upcoming workshops.

Sue Burks asked that all the maps that were sent out to the communities for Oak Wilt be sent back to the data can be collected. Another map will be sent with the collected data.

DOA – Rich Hauer announced that the Dept. of Ag has a new database and computer system, so to please bear with them for a couple of weeks until all the glitches are worked out.
